TALKAM Human Rights App: African Innovation Spotlighted on AU-EU Dashboard
Devatop Centre for Africa Development is proud to announce that our civic tech initiative the TALKAM Human Rights App (www.talkam.app)has been featured in the reputable AU-EU Innovation Agenda Dashboard and has been recognised for “Officially contributing to the implementation of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda”. This recognition highlights our continuous commitment to driving innovation and fostering sustainable development across Africa and beyond.
The AU-EU Innovation Agenda Dashboard is a collaborative platform established by the African Union (AU) and European Union (EU) to highlight and promote innovative projects addressing global challenges. These challenges include climate change, security threats, digital transformation, sustainable development, and public health crises, while also focusing on Africa’s specific needs such as infrastructure development, economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and good governance initiatives.
One such innovative project is the TALKAM App, which has made significant strides since its inception. Available on both mobile and web platforms, TALKAM enables citizens to report human rights abuses globally in multiple languages, learn about human rights, connect with others, and publish human rights news. It enables human rights organizations and agencies to receive and respond to reported cases of human rights abuses. Key achievements of the TALKAM initiative include:
- During the pilot phase, 250 cases were reported through the app in Nigeria and other countries, with 50 cases successfully resolved.
- The initiative has sensitized 3,500,000 citizens about human rights.
- 80 survivors and vulnerable women and youth received business training and skill acquisition support, with 45 receiving start-up kits to launch small businesses across four states.
- 150 survivors and vulnerable women and youth across four states received specialized psychosocial support services.
- The upgraded version of the TALKAM App was released in the first quarter of 2024, enhancing its features and accessibility.
The app has proven effective in improving awareness, increasing reportage, strengthening response systems, and stimulating action among citizens.
Being featured in the AU-EU Innovation Agenda Dashboard not only validates our efforts but also opens up new opportunities for collaboration and growth. We are excited to continue working with like-minded organizations, governments, and communities to expand the reach and impact of our initiative.
As we move forward, DEVATOP remains committed to driving innovation that addresses human rights abuse issues in Africa and Europe. We believe that through collaboration and shared vision, we can create a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
