DEVATOP CONDUCTS TALKAM APP CASE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP FOR NACTAL CASE MANAGERS AND NAPITP OFFICERS
DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development, in partnership with the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), organized a virtual orientation workshop to introduce the TALKAM App to case management organizations & NAPTIP Officers across the 36 State of Nigeria including the FCT. The workshop was attended by 67 NAPTIP Zonal Commanders and State Liaison Officers and about 117 participants from various NACTAL Case Management Organizations with their Case Managers. The workshop also provided training on how to effectively use the TALKAM Human Rights App, a civic technology designed to enhance the reporting, tracking, and management of human trafficking, gender-based violence (GBV) and other human rights violations cases.
Mr. Joseph Osuigwe, the Executive Director of DEVATOP, expressed gratitude to both NACTAL and NAPTIP for their long-standing support and collaboration. He emphasized the crucial role NACTAL has played in mobilizing case management organizations. He further mentioned that DEVATOP cannot be complete without mentioning NAPTIP who partnered with him to sensitize 2000 students across 5 FCT community schools in 2013 during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. He also acknowledged their roles in embracing and adopting the TALKAM App.
Mr. Abdulganiyu Abubakar, President of NACTAL, praised DEVATOP for organizing the workshop and highlighted the transformative impact of digital technology on society. He commended the initiative of the TALKAM App for its potential to enhance collaboration and service delivery among case management organizations. Mr Abubakar expressed the agency’s openness to adopting additional digital tools like the TALKAM App to further its impact.
Mr. Eric Umoru from SCALE also commended DEVATOP’s efforts in promoting effective case management and human rights advocacy. He stressed the importance of leveraging digital tools like the TALKAM App to improve reportage and increase the visibility and effectiveness of case management organizations.
Dr Emeh Magnus, Head of NAPTIP’s Rapid Response Unit, facilitated the sessions for both the NACTAL Case Management Organizations & NAPTIP Officers on effective case management, covering key roles and responsibilities, the definition and importance of case management, and best practices. He outlined a comprehensive approach that includes identifying and registering cases, assessing needs, developing and implementing individual case plans, and conducting follow-ups and reviews. Dr. Magnus emphasized that effective case management requires skills such as communication, problem-solving skills, empathy, and cultural competence.
Mr Emmanuel Augustine provided a detailed rundown of the TALKAM App, demonstrating its features and offering security tips for case managers. He emphasized the importance of using secure, password-protected devices and strong, unique passwords to protect sensitive case information.
Additionally, Mr. Ebere Princewill from the Nigeria Data Protection Commission led a session on compliance with Nigeria’s data protection laws. He explained the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, the role of Data Protection Officers, and the need for organizations to register with the National Data Protection Commission.
The workshops concluded with remarks from various participants, including Mrs. Gloria Bai, NAPTIP Zonal Commander of the Makurdi Zone, Mr Abdulkadir Abubakar, and Misbahu Iyya Kaura who called for more in-person or geographical zone training to enhance officers’ capabilities.
