Devatop Sensitizes Guardians and Child Domestic Workers On Legal Rights and Safety Practices In Lagos State.

On August 13th & 15th, 2024, Devatop Centre for Africa Development, with support from The Freedom Fund, hosted the third sensitization event at the Ijegun Egba & Iyana-Isashi communities of Lagos State respectively. The event which brought together 20 employers and 19 Child Domestic Workers (CDWs) focused on educating both guardians/employers and Child Domestic Workers (CDWs) about safeguarding practices and legal rights.

The event facilitated discussions on the challenges faced by CDWs, emphasizing their welfare and protection. Various survivors shared their experiences, stressing the need for better conditions and fair treatment. One of the facilitators from the Ijegun-Egba community Mrs  Aderonke Oyelakin provided insights into legal frameworks and support mechanisms, encouraging participants to apply this knowledge to enhance CDW safety in their community.

To further promote CDW protection, participants during the breakout sessions were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained and actively engage in safeguarding efforts. Guardians were reminded of their critical role in fostering safe working conditions, while CDWs were empowered with the confidence to seek help when needed.

The event was a significant step forward in protecting Child Domestic Workers as attendees were urged to utilize everything learnt by reporting any instances of abuse through the TALKAM App and to actively support CDWs in their communities.
